1. What We Collect and Why

Location (Precise & Background)

We collect your precise GPS location while you are actively running a quest. Location is used solely to detect when you are near a quest checkpoint and to provide turn-by-turn guidance. We also collect location in the background while the foreground guidance service is active (when your screen is off during a quest). We never collect location when you are not on a quest. Location data is never sold or shared with third parties.

Account Information

When you create a Waybound account via Google Sign-In, we receive your name, email address, and profile photo from Google. This is used to identify your account, display your profile, and associate your quests and inventory with you.

Quest and Activity Data

We store the quests you create and participate in, your checkpoint completions, interaction results, and quest ratings. This data is stored in Firebase (Google Cloud) and is associated with your account.

Photos

If a quest checkpoint requires a photo interaction, your photo is uploaded to Firebase Storage temporarily for AI validation. Photos are not shared publicly and are not used for any purpose other than validating the checkpoint interaction.

Fitness Data (Optional)

If you connect your Strava account, we access your Strava profile to create activity records on your behalf after completing a quest. We do not read your existing Strava activities. Strava connection is entirely optional.

Device Sensors

Waybound uses your device’s camera (for QR code scanning and photo interactions) and, on supported devices, the compass/magnetometer (for compass bearing interactions). Sensor data is processed locally on your device and is never transmitted.

2. How We Use Your Data

• To provide the quest guidance experience
• To detect checkpoint proximity using GPS
• To validate quest interactions (photo, QR, compass)
• To store your quest history and inventory
• To display your profile in the app
• To export your activity to Strava if you choose to connect it

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond operating the app.

3. Data Storage and Security

All user data is stored in Google Firebase (Firestore and Firebase Storage). Firebase is protected by Google’s security infrastructure. We use Firebase Authentication for account security. OAuth tokens (Strava) are stored in your device’s secure keystore (Android Keystore) and never transmitted to our servers.

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties except:

• Google Firebase — cloud storage and authentication provider
• OpenAI — quest narrative generation. Only anonymised quest parameters are sent, never your personal details.
• Strava — only if you explicitly connect your account
• OpenWeatherMap — weather data for quest generation. Your approximate location is sent to retrieve local weather only.
• Mapbox — map tile rendering. Your location is used to load map tiles.

All third-party services are bound by their own privacy policies.

5. Background Location

Waybound requests background location access exclusively to keep the GPS guidance system active while your screen is off during a quest. This permission is active only while the foreground guidance service is running, indicated by a persistent notification on your device. We do not access your location in the background at any other time.

6. Children’s Privacy

Waybound is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

7. Your Rights

You may request deletion of your account and all associated data by contacting us at the email below. You can disconnect Strava at any time from the app settings. You can revoke location permissions at any time in your device settings, though this will prevent quest guidance from functioning.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. We will notify you of significant changes via the app or email. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
